Bowling Tips: Techniques of Hook Bowling

The hook-ball delivery is like a handshake gesture and preferred by all of the top bowlers. And hook-ball bowling nets top pin falls.

There is no doubt that the hook-ball is the best delivery in the game of 10 pin bowling. The completion of the balls course is a guarantee of the most pin falls and is as easy to execute as a handshake and probably the best way to describe it. With the entire delivery the hand is held in the shake hand position.

There is practically no strain on the wrist when throwing a hook and a strain is definitely noticed with a straight ball. A change to a hook from a straight ball is a big change and you will quickly notice why the hook-ball is so popular with the sports top participants.

When the hook-ball is thrown it will be almost straight. About two thirds way down the lane it suddenly veers left and spins with intensity. The powerful hook is called a “heavy. Watch this ball bury itself in a pocket with a strike. That’s a heavy ball. Many times it carries light, but it’s still heavy ball.

How to hold the ball to throw a hook. Proper positioning of the fingers are placed on the right or slightly lower. A straight ball is thrown with fingers under the ball.  Therefore the position of the thumb for a hook-ball is between 9 - 11:30, and is most likely closed to 11.

A desire to learn, how to control the hook-ball you go bowling, is all that is needed to increase your scores. Using a three hole ball as example, your middle finger goes into the ball horizontally. Letting go of the ball require that your thumb to be released first, resting the ball on your fingers. In a split second your hand comes up straight and causes the ball to spin, left to right down the lane. Your hand should follow through straight up to eye level.

It is imperative not to roll your wrist to the left and important in throwing the hook-ball your wrist remains solid and firm. The stiffer the wrist the better the results will be and you will have the hook. This is the hook not a curve.

Very important, when becoming a hook-ball bowler is to do their utmost and learn to perfect a delivery that is uniform. Meaning that the ball will be the same each time you throw it. This uniform throwing of the ball will enable you convert your spares and remember that two extra spares a game will be the key to improving your average. Twenty pins per game.

The hook ball, as it is turning, carries the action which causes greater pin falling and more than any other delivery. This and ease of delivery are the main reasons and one of the important things to remember is to keep the wrist  for a well delivered hook and as with any other ball delivery the right elbow needs to be kept close to your body. All of these steps are highly recommended.

Some women have difficulty with throwing a hook that has a short break. Some women throw a hook that is wide even with a firm wrist. They have control difficulty and facing the problem with allowing a little extra room for the hook. However, when they have determined the problem of their delivery they do better with their delivery.

Also true, is that some women have difficulty getting action on the ball. With the knowledge of what to do - keeping their fingers horizontally and lifting them at the second the ball is release, the problem is solved.

The key to success in bowling is hook bowling! I recommend it.
